Hello there fair reader. Are you sitting comfortably? Yes? Good! So here goes I’m going to try and explain what I’m trying to do here and what this entire thing is about. I think that’s what I’m trying to do I’m not too sure!
Well if you have this bookmarked from my previous blogging escapades over patchy he past decade or so you’re going to notice some slight changes to how and me what write about. If however this is your first time stumbling across me then this is going to go one of two ways. You either love me or you hate me. I don’t care which.
To business then. I’m going to be posting in equal parts personal and professional. That’s the first thing to understand. Secondly you might have noticed the design, or well lack of it going on here. Now considering what I do for a living you might be asking yourself wtf is that about. Good that’s the idea let me try and explain.
I’ve been speaking to couple friends regarding design and content how the two are not always agnostic of each other and how there can be be a synergy between the content of a site and the design of a site. The more I thought about this the more I wondered if that is correct. Does design influence content and reader interaction? Sure design directly affect user interaction and user experience but what about content consumption does it matter? I want to say it doesn’t but is that the actual case?
One if the problems I face daily during my day job is evidence based design, or lack of it. How so much of what we do is based I what we like ‘just because’. This is never a good thing is it?
So after more thought and conversation I’m going to try something. Where as I would normally start out with a design and build the site then start populating it. In the first instance I’m going to take this stock install of WordPress and use the popular Skeleton bootstrap boiler plate theme and create a child theme. Add in a couple of categories and start writing. I’ve added in Universal Analytics tracking code to monitor things and I’m going to see what happens. I’ll be writing about not only my life and all the normal blog kinda guff but also meta blogging about the design choices I make and why.
How’s that going to work? Well hopefully you will talk about it and share it I social sites. The more readers I get the better stats I will have to work with. Once I have a reasonable sample size I’ll start making some changes in the design. Each change I’ll discuss and split test, whichever of those changes get the most views and interactions will be the ones that stay. Think of it as kind of Darwinism for digital content. Natural selection if you will. Totally independent of what I think is ‘cool’.
“Ah” I hear you saying but the initial changes and the A,B,X cases will be described by you so it’s not reflective what you’re trying to achieve is it! Indeed and I have considered this so in the. First instance I will make a few choices as a catalyst to kick things off much like in the case of natural selection environmental changes often prompt the adaptation of species. I’ll be making a few small design choices and then we will go from there. Where it goes will be totally up to the views of the content. Ideally I would like a interactive community where I get feedback via comment or emails or whatever with idea’s and suggestions about what would make consuming the content better for you.
Will it just be text here? I don’t know my plan is mixed media, I want to explore things I have not really done before so maybe audio and video. Certainly images. Whatever I do code wishes will be freely available for you to use, rip apart and and analyse however yo used see fit. Anything I learn I will document and post back about. It maybe I roll this in to my research but in no way will I keep whatever I find or create here to myself. Since I need you to help me make this work the least I can do I share whatever this is with you.
Am I going the limiting this to design? Nope not at all. Design and structure of the site is all open to testing. Navigation, layouts etc etc. The only thing I won’t be testing is the content that will be me. Remember this is my blog my diary and I will be using it not only for this but also to try and figure my life out. I used to love blogging, ranting and raging and talking to others like me. I have views and opinions a lot of them you might not agree with and that’s fine but remember this is both a experiment and diary I guess.
One thing that concerned me before was how open I should be be. Previously it was all or nothing I ranted and raged with little thought for consequence. I don’t beieve this a persons blog or whatever should be part of the criteria when work comes in to question. That is the case though in the world we live in. That said I tried before to be me without been be, have a censored version of who I am and it didn’t work. I’m me if you don’t like it well that’s on you go and don’t come back I don’t believe in any sort of censorship and I will not censor myself or my work.
I’d love to hear what you have to say or think about what I’m trying to do. Here so please do sound off in the comments. After all who doesn’t love having the first post
