Update – 30 Day squat challenge

I’m nine days in to the 30 day squat challenge and what can I say other than wow.  Initially I thought it would be easy.  How wrong was I?!

Today I hit the 100 rep point with 40kg burden and oh boy, my form is getting way way better.  I’m seeing improvements in my depth and flexibility is improving drastically.  Hitting the 100 was pretty gruelling an after I was literally dripping sweat but wow I felt amazing.

105 is tomorrow and you know what I really can’t wait! It’s something to focus on which is really what I need right now.

Bioshocking romance

This is one of those things you really have to see, I’m not very sure I’ll ever get the opportunity to do something like this myself any more but I guess you never know.

Give it a read, it’s one of those things that is worth sharing.  I to admit it did give me a warm fuzzy feeling after the initial pang of sadness that this is something I don’t have in my life.

Design tweaks round one

Time to talk about the a few small site tweaks so I can start to make some progress on the layout.

I’m going to be doing a simple footer implementation over the weekend and changing the side bar and seeing how these two small tweaks go. Traffic is currently not high so it would be unfair to really use this as a test but I do need to start making some changes in the look of things to keep up the momentum and really get me back into the swing of things.

What I’m going to do is separate posts about the changes I do make as I make them and update the code base.

The footer will likely contain social links in the main to various services. I’m considering replication of the main navigation but I’m not convinced it will really fit in with the content central focus, It may be the first larger split test I do.

I’m going to stage development of headers and footer. It will also be interesting to see if the sidebar is required at all.

I’m also considering if this blog page should be the landing page or if it would be prudent to take the opportunity to build a landing page to highlight key aspects of the project. Further to this I’m wondering if it would be beneficial to have each post limited to a excerpt and then click through to a full view of the post?

30 day squat challenge

I’ve heard about this squat challenge lark for a while now.  I do love squatting it’s my favourite lift right up there with dead lifts.  So to spur me on I thought I would take it up, modify it slightly and see how far I get.  It came to light again last night after talking about it with a friend and he suggesting I do it but with chin up’s.  Though I like this idea I don’t think I could manage it so this is what I’m going to do before attacking that challenge!

Previously I’ve done the 100 rep challenge of various exercises, bench press, fly’s etc but this will be my first attempt at hitting the daily goals of one of those with squats.

So to make it a little more interesting for myself I’m going to be doing this with a 2.2 metre olympic bar weighing in a 20kg and 10kg plate on each side making a total a 40kg burden. I’m going to be taking a mid width stance, low bar hold which is my usual and most comfortable squat position for me.  Additionally I will be lifting in DoWin lifting platforms to help me hit my best form with while doing this breaking parallel or below.  Should I need a break I will allow myself 10 seconds rest periods if required.

Currently my body weight is at 87.4kg  I’ll try get some video during the course of this but it might be somewhat difficult depending on which gym I’m lifting at.  Hopefully but the end of this I will see some improvement in my quads, hams and glutes.

Below is the schedule I will be working to for the next 30 days with the reps.  I’ll be updating throughout.  I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has done similar and what gains if any you saw during it.  Sound off in the comments as always.

So this is what I'm going to be tasking myself with

Who’s afraid of Schrodinger’s blog?

Hello there fair reader.  Are you sitting comfortably? Yes? Good! So here goes I’m going to try and explain what I’m trying to do here and what this entire thing is about.  I think that’s what I’m trying to do I’m not too sure!

Well if you have this bookmarked from my previous blogging escapades over patchy he past decade or so you’re going to notice some slight changes to how and me what write about.  If however this is your first time stumbling across me then this is going to go one of two ways.  You either love me or you hate me.  I don’t care which.

To business then.  I’m going to be posting in equal parts personal and professional.  That’s the first thing to understand. Secondly you might have noticed the design, or well lack of it going on here.  Now considering what I do for a living you might be asking yourself wtf is that about.  Good that’s the idea let me try and explain.

I’ve been speaking to couple friends regarding design and content how the two are not always agnostic of each other and how there can be be a synergy between the content of a site and the design of a site.  The more I thought about this the more I wondered if that is correct.  Does design influence content and reader interaction? Sure design directly affect user interaction and user experience but what about content consumption does it matter? I want to say it doesn’t but is that the actual case?

One if the problems I face daily during my day job is evidence based design, or lack of it.  How so much of what we do is based I what we like ‘just because’.  This is never a good thing is it?

So after more thought and conversation I’m going to try something. Where as I would normally start out with a design and build the site then start populating it.  In the first instance I’m going to take this stock install of WordPress and use the popular Skeleton bootstrap boiler plate theme and create a child theme.  Add in a couple of categories and start writing. I’ve added in Universal Analytics tracking code to monitor things and I’m going to see what happens.  I’ll be writing about not only my life and all the normal blog kinda guff but also meta blogging about the design choices I make and why.

How’s that going to work? Well hopefully you will talk about it and share it I social sites.  The more readers I get the better stats I will have to work with.  Once I have a reasonable sample size I’ll start making some changes in the design. Each change I’ll discuss and split test, whichever of those changes get the most views and interactions will be the ones that stay. Think of it as kind of Darwinism for digital content.  Natural selection if you will.  Totally independent of what I think is ‘cool’.

“Ah” I hear you saying but the initial changes and the A,B,X cases will be described by you so it’s not reflective what you’re trying to achieve is it! Indeed and I have considered this so in the. First instance I will make a few choices as a catalyst to kick things off much like in the case of natural selection environmental changes often prompt the adaptation of species.  I’ll be making a few small design choices and then we will go from there.  Where it goes will be totally up to the views of the content.  Ideally I would like a interactive community where I get feedback via comment or emails or whatever with idea’s and suggestions about what would make consuming the content better for you.

Will it just be text here? I don’t know my plan is mixed media, I want to explore things I have not really done before so maybe audio and video.  Certainly images.  Whatever I do code wishes will be freely available for you to use, rip apart and and analyse however yo used see fit.  Anything I learn I will document and post back about.  It maybe I roll this in to my research but in no way will I keep whatever I find or create here to myself.  Since I need you to help me make this work the least I can do I share whatever this is with you.

Am I going the limiting this to design? Nope not at all.  Design and structure of the site is all open to testing.  Navigation, layouts etc etc.  The only thing I won’t be testing is the content that will be me.  Remember this is my blog my diary and I will be using it not only for this but also to try and figure my life out.  I used to love blogging, ranting and raging and talking to others like me.  I have views and opinions a lot of them you might  not agree with and that’s fine but remember this is both a experiment and diary I guess.

One thing that concerned me before was how open I should be be.  Previously it was all or nothing I ranted and raged with little thought for consequence.  I don’t beieve this a persons blog or whatever should be part of the criteria when work comes in to question.  That is the case though in the world we live in.  That said I tried before to be me without been be, have a censored version of who I am and it didn’t work. I’m me if you don’t like it well that’s on you go and don’t come back I don’t believe in any sort of censorship and I will not censor myself or my work.

I’d love to hear what you have to say or think about what I’m trying to do. Here so please do sound off in the comments.  After all who doesn’t love having the first post ;)
